Joey Saves Inq Tech-Writing World, Starting With ‘You’

youI like linking to Joey Alarilla. If you wanna have a sudden gush of visitors, in my case from 1 to a whopping 5 (wow!!!), then go link to Joey Alarilla. Joey , Joey , Joey , Joey.

Anyway, Joey (ok enough with the links), was nice enough to email a heads up re the relaunching of the you.inq7.net site.

You is Inq7.net’s “Website for the interactive youth”, which means I’ve only half a reason to have anything to do with it. Since my work lets me be interactive, you guess the other term which doesn’t apply.

At any rate, You hosts many of the articles I’ve written for Inq over the years, including a special Youngblood submission I did many summers ago, during my angsty (and very prolific because of) years.

Which is why, in a rare show of extreme modesty, the first thing I thought of when Joey sent me the link was “WHAT ABOUT MY ARTICLESSSS!??!?”

Ahhh yes, quite an example for the youth I am.

But anyway, two points. Terrific thumbs up to Joey (oops there’s that link again) and getting Inq’s act together re their website ventures. Good on you.

I’m not sure he knows this, but Manny of Speed asked me to review Hackenslash.net last year and I gave a fairly glowing review, not necessarily because of the website features, which I found wanting (no search! sorry Joey.), but because of the terrific writing.

These guys review games, and have carte blanche authority to not only praise, but more importantly, diss to death games they don’t like.

In the hardware/software review section however, we cannot do that. I’ve seen finicky advertisers pull out from publications that speak low of their products (even if only once), and since then I had been wary of doing so as a favor to my editors. Instead I resort to other tricks like discussing specs, pointing out this or that, but without comparison or comments.

The Hackenslash guys however, are not constrained, so they let ‘er rip, and have a terrific time doing so, hence the content benefits tremendously. If you know what you’re talking about + really live and love your subject + have carte blanche authority (there’s even some cuss words in there), there’s no way you can go wrong. It’s always refreshing to read someone who knows what he’s talking about and does so with passion. Only a few writers in Inq overall do that and they also happen to be the best.

And secondly, (yes there’s a second point to this), fantastic news that Joey is gonna write for Cnet! Cnet is holy grail stuff for me and their maillists are the only ones I’ve found worthwhile to subscribe.

Thaaaat’s just great. Juuust as I was getting friendly with Joey, he does something to make me feel all inadequate and insecure. Sigh, time for another angsty youngblood article. ;0

Seriously, there’s a fodder for a success article there. What if I cover it? hmm..

  1. hey gary, thanks man, you’re making me blush.

cuss words? in hackenslash? hell, what cuss words? hehe :) God, that reminds me again of how much the matrix: path of neo sucks, as alex eloquently showed us in his review of the pc game.

hope you’ll like the new YOU — not to mention the new hackenslash. soon…

    cheers,
    joey
