I just watched this video about Barcamp, with the goal to show what it's all about and such.

I first read of it from Sacha's blog. Incidentally, her blog, featuring her travails as a stude in Canada, is a fascinating read of the adventures (and misadventures) of a young woman learning her way around the campus, and consequently in life.

It loads like molasses (sorry Sacha :D), but when you read it you'll likely feel like I do, and applaud her, as if cheering on a heroine in a movie, as she goes through her daily stuff. She is me several years ago (just how many years is not the subject of this blog entry thank you very much), and you'd probably find a part of yourself in her as well.

At any rate, Barcamp reminds me strangely enough, of a conference backroom. Anyone who does conferences will tell you that the real action happens in the area behind the stage, where all the geeks, speakers, and geek-speakers join up for refreshments.

The conversations there are fun and all limitations set forth by NDA agreements are thrown into the wind. These really capture the gist of these meetings, afa im concerned. You make friends and have a blast, all the while sharing what you know. In other words, its a party, where the people happen to be interesting (to a geek).

However like any gathering, I foresee some challenges:

logistics. Particularly, where.

Who's gonna spend for this. There must be as little reliance on companies whatsoever, and so it has to be kkb.

Pinoys are an affable, easy-going lot, so I'm sure it'd be easy for everyone to get along. (This isn't really a challenge, just thought that out aloud.)

Someone has to lead.

Even the <s>party</s> Barcamp in that video must have had some sort of taskmaster to get things going. The local tech scene (whether unfortunately or otherwise), has a lot of kids, and I'll be honest here, the maturity level isn't impressive.

It's very easy for things like these to digress into a drinking session, or taken over by one of those loud boring personalities.

So there has to be some chief dude or dudes to take the reins, if only to every so gently, ask a question to a shy speaker so that he can start talking, start talking themselves and ask the right questions to get others involved, and then step back and watch the magic of people enjoying each other's company.

It shouldn't be that hard. No one's more social than Pinoys. Once you get him out of his shell he'll talk up a storm.

Ex-boss Boss Ruby (who'll forever be called 'boss' till the day I die) was kind enough to correct me on my Beatle's "Rain" post, where I mentioned Paul McCartney was 'years away' from the 'Eagles' when it should've been 'Wings'. Arrgh. Hey at least it was close.

So no sooner than this snafu was pointed out than when I checked out the Red Hot Chili Peppers "Dani California" video, where they parody several other rock bands, further testing my (by now, well established) weak rock knowledge.

So what the hey, let's try naming them all:

First, the vid:

Then, here're the bands I counted:

elvis

beatles

prince (?)

tom petty (?)

freddie mercury (?)

alice cooper

kiss

kurt cobain, so that's nirvana

and Flea's impersonating someone else I can't figure out. Maybe from Motley Crue? And now to look for the official list..

(few mins. later..)

and here is the official Wikipedia page, with:

elvis

beatles

jimi hendrix

alice cooper

sex pistols

motley crue

nirvana

Preeeety close i suppose. Although I couldve sworn that's Kiss lead singer Gene Simmons when Keidis (?) sticks his tongue out, and I'm sure that's Tom Petty (credit my having older sisters with rock tastes), in the tall hat. Incidentally, there's an accusation of plagiarism going around between the song and one of Tom Petty's.

I just uploaded my Strawberry Switchblade Video On Youtube, singing one of their most famous hits "Since Yesterday". Strawberry Switchblade is a UK two-girl band that started in the early 80's, and whose songs reverberated all the way throughout high school and college in the 90's.

I have two of their albums in vinyl (hopefully still ok in a box under the stairs), and hundreds of memories listening to them along with many other artists of that era with my friends.

I happened onto Joey's blogpost this morning about Nostalgictrip.wordpress.com, and immediately decided to upload it so I can share the video with them, along with my own Youtube find, the Beatle's 1966 Rain video (which believe it or not I give a listen to at least once a day).

Anyway, here's the video I just uploaded:

The lyrics are quite apt to whenever I attend one of our HS reunions. It goes:

And as we sit here alone
Looking for a reason to go on
It's so clear that all we have now
Are our thoughts of yesterday

HS reunions are often forced, awkward meetings of people who have very little in common after having so much back in the past, and so I catch myself thinking these lines whenever we meet up.

Inspite of that, we all know we've played important parts in each other's lives, and so we make an effort to meet, only to feel the same each time.

Anyway, I did a dir > prn of my hard disk mp3 directory and here's a list of some of the 80s and 90s songs I have in it, just for kicks.

My to-do list is full, I got up late, and I'm all confused on what to start. What then to do?

Why, Surf Youtube of course! Second favored activity to "aimless - blog - hopping", and followed by "playing - NBALive - 2k - until - my - eyes - turn - red", Surfing Youtube aims to serve my need for superflous information and voyeuristic impulses whilst being only slightly more entertaining than channel surfing on the couch for a few hours.

At any rate, today we've got Chingy & Tyrese, with "Pullin me back", definitely on my A-list of "songs to surreptitously download off the Internet", incidentally, another favored activity.

Other than the killer beat, it features the fantastic Aston Martin Vanquish, and for a techie bent, the interesting Helio mobile phone, which I really wanna get a hold off one of these days, if only because of it's very hip website and Myspace connectivity.

Then of course, there's Yaya DaCosta, supplying the shorty role for the video, who was in America's Next Top Model (2003), and in the movie "Take The Lead", which I reviewed for Movie Exchange, btw (notice the not - so - subtle plugging. Smooth no?).

And now, for your viewing pleasure:
